Passion Time: Whole School Read-A-Loud

Today all of the Kindergarten and First Grades classes read in the K/1 Hallway.

So much Fun!

Recycling and Composting Assembly

Mrs. Casagrande's class joined us for a recycling/composting video and sorting games to reinforce our recycling/composting program at school.  We have also been regularly composting in our classroom since the beginning of the year.

Goodbye to Miss Spinali!

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Miss Spinali Student Teach with our class.  She is well on her way to becoming a wonderful teacher.  We saw her today right across the hall in Mrs. Hancock's room and many of the children already made her some cards.  She will be missed!

Author Visit - Brian Lies

Today we joined all the other Kindergarten classes in the Library for Brian's presentation.  He spoke about the many books he wrote and illustrated.  He read "The Bat at the Beach" and told us that his inspiration for writing the story was going to the beach and seeing small children wearing yellow floaties.  He thought it was funny how their arms stayed out to the side and went up and down when they ran.  This is why the bat wears floaties in many of his stories.  Brian showed us some of his sketches and drafts of many of his books and showed us a 1 page story that he wrote and illustrated in second grade.  He told us that it took a lot of practice to become the artist and writer he is today.  He reinforced the concept "practice makes better" throughout his presentation.  At the end, Brian took ideas from the children to illustrate a bat trick-or- treating.  When he was finished, he turned his picture upside down.  The bat was hanging upside down and his candy was falling out of his halloween bucket.  So fun!!

Thank you TESPTO!!

Pajama Day Fun

Our Class was so excited to wear our pajamas to school today.  They want to work on filling our kindness jar in 1 week for a new reward.  Miss Spinali has been taking over quite a bit of our class and will take over full time next week.  When I asked the children if Miss Spinali already seemed like a "real" teacher, it was a unanimous YES!  We are going to be sad to see her leave us the following week, but are lucky that she is only moving across the hall to first grade.

Shade Shelters 2

Mat Man with Miss Comeau

We are working on making sure we remember to add details with our drawings.  Ms. Comeau, our OT Assistant came to introduce Mat Man with a song to help us remember to add details to our drawings.  We did a before and after picture that the children brought home yesterday.

Science - shade

Yesterday, the children used the following materials to make a shade shelter outside.  They were all very busy and thought it was fun and tricky.  Some of your children talked about making shade shelters at home too.

A big gust of wind blew many of our shade shelters away.  The children noticed that the ones that remained had more tape to secure them.

Welcome to our newest friend, Luca!

Miss Berkeley

Today, Ms Berkley read the story "The Invisible Boy".   She also talked about making others feel good by greeting each other.  It was fun to do together.

Recycle Truck

On our way in from recess, we got the chance to watch the recycle truck in action.

Walk-a-thon

Lots of laps around the playground.  So much Fun!

Science

Today we made "shade" shelters for animals in our class.  We also went out to see where the sun was at different points in the day.  Some predicted that it would stay where it was and some predicted that it would move.  The sun did move and one of the kids noticed that the shade spots moved as well.

Some finished projects

Some students chose to continue to work on their animal shelters at home.

Science - Energy and the Sun

Last week we did some experiments with sand, soil and rocks (we also did water on Wednesday).  We made predictions about what would happen if we put these things in the sun and shade.  We put themometers in each cup to determine how much the sun (or shade) affected the temperature of each.  Most students did predict that the sand would get the hottest from the sun.
