Dr Seuss Day

We decorated our classroom doors for Dr. Seuss' birthday.  We also walked around the school to see all the decorated doors.  The favorites were "Go Dog Go" and "The Lorax".

"Chief" from the Topsfield Fire Department was our Guest Reader for Dr. Seuss Day.  He read the book "Are You My Mother?"  He also gave the children Topsfield Fire Department activity books and crayons.  The children had the opportunity to ask Chief questions about being a Fire Fighter.

Miss Anna, our Endicott Intern was our guest reader for day 2 of Dr. Seuss Day.  She read "The Tooth Book".

Miss Anna generated discussion about the Dentist and taking care of our teeth.  The children participated in "Turn & Talk" with a buddy and discussed their experiences at the Dentist.

The children graphed their rainbow fish at snack.

Buddies - EEKK & Turn and Talk

Miss Sideri and her class taught us about EEKK and Turn & Talk when we did Reading Buddies with them in the Fall.  The children have continued to do very well with theses activities in our class.

EEKK
The Children pointed to and read the title and author of these familiar books and then  "read" the pictures of the book together.

Turn & Talk

We "Turn & Talk" after a story some times and the children will tell each other their favorite parts of the story.  We also may do a "Turn & Talk" after a vacation or weekend and tell each other something special they may have done.  It's a wonderful way for all of the children to express their ideas when we may not have the time to do so in a whole group.

Reading Standard:  MA.6. With prompting and support, “read” the illustrations in a picture book by describing a character or place depicted, or by telling how a sequence of events unfolds.

Snowballs by Lois Ehlert

Our class read the Lois Ehlert book Snowballs.  She used a lot of different "stuff" to illustrate so many of her snow creations in this book.  She has a page of "good stuff" at the end of the book.  She also has snow information and different snowmen at the end of this book. Our class used a variety of "stuff" to make a big Snowman creation and each student made made the their own. The following are some of the different things that the children made:
Snow Dad
Snow Mama
Snow Baby

Happy New Year! 2016

Our class had a discussion about the year 2015 and all of the children's favorite things that they did last year.

We also discussed the new year of 2016 that started on January 1st and whether any one knew what making a New Years Resolution meant.  We did get quite a few adorable ideas that I didn't write down at the time.  The following are the resolutions that the children chose for 2016.

Essential Question:  Why do people make New Years Resolutions?

Lois Ehlert Books

Our class has been reading quite a few Lois Ehlert books this Fall and Winter.
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf
The Leaf Man
Nuts to You
Boo to You
&
Snowballs
Some of the children said that they have Lois Ehlert books at home.  We would love to have as many different books by this author as we can and would appreciate if you could have your child bring in to school next week (only if you have one).  I borrowed some extras from our school Library and Miss Judy.

We will be doing some shared reading with buddies to look at books together and discuss their favorite parts of the books.  We will also be reinforcing 1:1 correspondence when "reading" the titles of books as well as the author.  We will be sure to take many pictures and post next week.

Thanks so much!
