Reading Buddies

Miss Sideri's First Grade Class came to visit our class this month for a special Story Time.

Hannah's big sister, Emma and Max's big brother, Ethan are in Miss Sideri's Class.  It was so successful that we hope to continue to do this twice a month so that all the children will be able to participate.

Miss Sideri couldn't believe how well our preschoolers listened when she read a story and talked about Reading Buddies. We learned about EEKK, which is elbow to elbow, knee to knee with our buddies so that you can read 1 book together with your buddy.

Miss Sideri's class had folders with many books that they were able to read to our preschoolers.  We also learned about "turn and talk", which is where Miss Sideri gave a couple of ideas about what what the buddies would talk about (favorite part of story or what they will be for Halloween).  The children had such a wonderful experience with the "big kids".

Looking forward to the next visit from Miss Sideri's 1st Grade Class!

Our Preschool Friends

We have met many new friends in our class this year and have been busy learning all of their names.  Many of the children come on different days.  We made a class book of all our preschool friends for our book area.  You can print the pictures and have your child make their own book for home.   Have your child "read" their Preschool Friends Book to you when they finish.  Please click on the "Friends" link below to look at all of your child's new preschool friends.

Walk A Thon

We had a lot of fun walking and jogging around the big playground for the Walk a thon.  Thank you so much for the support in Fundraising for our school!

We walked around the playground 4 times.

Volunteer Needed

Thank you so much for those of you that have helped me with many of my classroom preparations.  I am in need of a volunteer to help with the students name puzzles (cutting letters, contact paper and velcro dots to adhere letters).  Let me know if you would be able to help.  Thanks so much!

A circle is a shape that goes around
A circle is a shape that goes round and round and round

How many seeds are in the apple?

We cut open one of our small red apples and made predictions about how many seeds may be inside.  There were lots of good guesses.  We counted 6 seeds.  Cora, Maeve and Juliet all made the correct prediction that there would be 6 seeds inside the apple.

The children also made predictions as to what would happen to the apple that we cut up.  Some of the predictions were:

rot
get old
turn brown
get smooshy
and even "rust"
(we discussed how metal is something that may rust)

We left a whole apple, and apple sliced in 2 to see the star, and the cored apple on the discovery table to observe and discuss.

I hope your children have told you our special  story using a real apple.
Once upon a time
there was a little red (green or yellow too) house
with no windows and no doors
a chimney on top and a star inside.

Help your child tell this special story as you slice an apple in two to reveal the special star inside.  They like to copy my exaggerated way of telling the story.  Lots of fun!

Apple Taste Test

We had an apple taste test at school.  Everyone tasted a piece of the red delicious apple, yellow delicious apple, and green granny smith apple.  The results are below.

11 children liked the red delicious apple the best.
5 children liked the green granny smith apple the best.
7 children liked the yellow delicious apple the best.
1 child didn't like any of the apples.

Way up High in the Apple Tree

Way up High in the Apple Tree
2 red apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmm, mmm, good!

Red Day

There was an evacuation drill yesterday on Red day and a red fire truck came to school.  We decided to take a picture with it.
Perfect for red day!

We went on a Color Hunt and found lots of different "red" things around our classroom.

Go on a Color Hunt at your house to see what red things you and your child can find.  Have fun!

FOUND

I was finishing cleaning our classroom and found the children's painting mats that we used all year.  Ofcourse, some of you may be just fine if they stay at school, but I will leave them on the round kitchen table in our room if you would like to come by for them.  I will most likely be here until 6:00 tonight and then again for a few hours tomorrow at some point.  Email me at crogers@topsfieldps.org if you want to coordinate a time.

Have a wonderful summer!!

Miss Carol

Goodbye Picnic

It was so nice to see so many of our families at our Goodbye Picnic.  We have thoroughly enjoyed our year with your children. We have all learned a lot and had lots of fun doing so.

  Enjoy your summer!

Who Do You See?

We made our own class book for our blog just like Eric Carle did with Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  Enjoy!!

Kindergarten Visits

Some of us visited Mrs. Craven's Kindergarten Class.

Some of us visited Mrs. Ragan's Kindergarten  Class.

Some of us visited Mrs. Martin's Kindergarten Class.

We all got to eat in the Cafeteria.

The children had lots of fun going on our Kindergarten visits and to the Cafeteria.  As the time gets closer to Kindergarten in September, have your child look at these pictures again as a reminder of what's to come.

Beach Day Fun

Today was a perfect beach day for our class out on the field.  The children all wore different bathing suits and brought lots of different beach towels. We had some many fun activities.
3 pools
(1 with a slide, 1 with sea creatures, and one to "swim" in)
a sprinkler
bubbles
shaving cream
beach balls
& more

We had push up popsicles for a treat.  Thank you to Ruby's Mom!

Huck's Dad brought a tree frog to show us.  They found at their house. It was a beautiful green and yellow and climbed up his arm. The children asked lots of great questions and made lots of good comments about the tree frog.

Thanks for coming Mr. Prazar!

We ended our Beach Day fun with a game of Drip, Drip, Drop (Duck, Duck, Goose with water)
